Memorial Day Weekend Forecast: Friday Update

Thursday morning’s update from the National Weather Service included minor changes to wind values as well as the timing of this weekend’s impacts. Those changes have been highlighted below.

Current forecast details for Beaufort County:

Winds

Northeast winds will begin to increase Thursday morning, becoming sustained between 10 and 15 mph with frequent gusts between 20 and 25 mph. Winds will increase again on Friday, becoming sustained between 15 and 20 mph with gusts between 25 and 30 mph possible through midnight Saturday. Our highest winds are expected to occur between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday.

Rain

Rain will begin to move into the area overnight Friday, with most areas receiving rain by sunrise Saturday. Rain will remain in the forecast through Monday with most areas of our county receiving 2 inches. Our heaviest rains are expected to occur between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday.

Thunderstorms

Thunderstorms are possible with this event and are most likely to occur between the hours of 2 p.m. and 1 a.m. Saturday afternoon / Sunday morning and again during the same period on Sunday afternoon / Monday morning.

Friday afternoon’s update from the National Weather Service included minor reductions in the anticipated rainfall totals and an increase in wind values for Beaufort County. Those changes have been highlighted below.

Current forecast details for Beaufort Co.

Coastal Flood Advisory

  • Waterways along the Pamlico River are expected to be 2 to 3 feet higher than normal through the weekend.
  • Areas susceptible to prolonged northeast winds could experience water levels 3 to 4 feet higher than normal late Saturday evening / night.  

 

Winds

  • Winds will remain sustained between 15 and 20 mph with gusts between 25 and 30 mph through midnight Saturday.
    • Areas along our open waterways could experience frequent gust up to 35 mph.
  • Our highest winds are expected to occur between 12 pm and 5 pm Friday as well as 7 am to 7 pm Saturday.

Rain

  • Rain will begin to move into Beaufort County early Saturday morning, with most areas receiving rain by 10 am. Rain will remain in the forecast through Monday with most areas receiving 1 to 2 inches.
    • Areas in the southeast corner of our county including Blounts Creek, Edwards, Bonnerton and Aurora could receive 2 to 3 inches.
  • Our heaviest rains are expected to occur between 2 am and 8 am Sunday morning.

 

Thunderstorms

  • While thunderstorms are possible with this event, they are not expected to be severe.
